I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.”

TODAY’S QUESTION

David asks, “Companies won’t hire me because I don’t have any local experience, but I can’t get local experience because no one will hire me…”

I’m sure they’re still serious about their diversity goals - just as long as the candidate is locally diversity 🙄.

Recommendation: If the first thing on your resume and the country you’re looking to work in don’t match, life sucks worse than it needs to. Here are a few ways to change that:

  • The first thing is to order your resume strategically. If you have a degree from a local school but no local work experience, start your resume with education and vice versa. If you have neither, you may need to write a cover letter explaining your tie to the country and why it’s a logical fit.

  • Work experience is where most candidates have the hardest time - you can pay for local school but who’s going to pay for local work experience (I hope this is never a thing). One way to change this is to start your resume with a “projects” section and include something relevant and local (school projects count).

  • The final thing, which not everyone loves, is to put an un-paid project or volunteer work as the first thing under your work experience section. I’ve seen many students who were part of a consulting group add this there. Click here for a list of NGOs world-wide where you can get involved and use this as you’re way into local experience.

Conclusion:

While I hate that this even exists, it does and if you can’t beat them, join them. If you have any local experience, start there. If you don’t, get creative and find ways to have the city or country you’re wanting to work in at the top of your resume.
