TODAY’S QUESTION

Anita asks, “I have been applying for months but I’m exhausted. How do I stay motivated to keep applying?”

Recommendation: October has been a tough month. It’s not as easy as other years and the sentiment is rather negative in my opinion. Here’s how I would stay motivated:

  • First, find the parts you hate about the job search and either reduce them or improve them. If you hate sending cold applications, then send less and tailor them more. If you hate networking events, focus on meeting people over LinkedIn.

  • Second, find the parts you love and do more of them, altering them to be even more enjoyable. I always liked networking so I would do more of that. Try to make those connections into something resembling friendship. Ask them if they want to grab coffee if you two get along over Teams.

  • Finally, just simply take care of yourself. If you want to stay long term and keep going when others fail, sleep and nutrition are going to play a big part. Marathon runners eat in the first 5 km so that they can keep running at the 30 km mark.

Conclusion:

Motivation and drive are brutal when you keep getting rejected. Take the approach of a long distance runner and do what is needed now so you can stay active a month from now.
