TODAY’S QUESTION

David asks, “I’ve got competing offers now, which seems crazy. How should I pick?”

Look at you go! Sounds like I’m about to lose a subscriber but gain a success story!

Recommendation: It’s a wonderful feeling to be the girl everyone at the ball wants to dance with. Here’s how to pick between suiters:

  • First, set out the main metrics you’d use to make a decision. These should be general enough that they would go with any job offer such as salary, growth & learning, location, visa opportunities, etc.

  • Second, fill in what you already know about the offers you have and add in any interviews that are in their final stages. Don’t give up on them if they are competitive with the other firms.

  • Finally, it’s likely that there will be one offer that is far superior based on your needs. One may be more well-known or pay much more.

    • If that’s the case, consider what would make the secondary offer attractive enough to take it and make that pitch to them. Don’t feel like you need to argue intensely but give them the opportunity to compete.

    • If you’re truly stuck between the two, talk it out with a friend or family member. Sometimes talking it out allows you to see more clearly.

Conclusion:

You’re killing it with multiple offers. Now you get to make the decision that will have quite an impact on your career and life for the next few years so choose carefully.
