TODAY’S QUESTION
Susan asks, “I’m graduating at the end of September and I will probably not have a role. What am I supposed to do?”
Recommendation: there are a few common problems you’re likely to face in the coming months. Here is what I would do if I woke up in your shoes:
First, make sure your absolute basics are covered:
1. Find a place to live - common options are to find a shared flat with friends, rent a room in the city, live somewhere outside of the expensive cities in a short term rental or move back home.
2. How are your finances - it’s better to face the harsh truths now. Do you need a part time job or can you pick up some freelance work related to your old job. Money is one of the biggest stressors for many candidates.
Second, you’re not alone in this. There will be tons of other students graduating from your program and competing programs in the same area. Find a way to create a community of those going through the same thing. Meet up and apply to jobs together at a coffee shop or have a drink on the weekend to share stories.
Finally, see the job search as a series of steps so you know where to focus your time, getting better at the right skills at the right time:
1. If you can’t get interviews: build a better resume or network.
2. Cant pass first round interviews: get better at telling your story as it relates to the job description.
3. Cant pass final round interviews: write down what isn’t working and focus on practicing those questions or skills during mocks with your most detail oriented friends.
Conclusion:
Get the basics covered, create a community, and find out where you need to work in the job search.
