TODAY’S QUESTION

Arthur asks, “Do my stories need to change depending on the company or role interviewing me or can I keep them the same?”

I’ve changed my mind on this because of how a recent client got a job after changing his strategy with stories.

Recommendation: If you’re interviewing for a company and willing to give it your true full force, this is a strategy I’ve seen work and am now recommending to current clients:

  • First, fill in the following three blanks

    • This job is in the _________ industry

    • This job’s main responsibilities would be ________ and __________

    • The interviewer works mostly with _________

  • Now, you need at a minimum, one story for each blank. Best case scenario is that all your answers fit at least two. You will nearly always get asked to explain your experience with the second set of blanks but if you can make them relevant to prompt one and three, all the better.

  • At the end of the day, we’ve all been rejected and told someone else had more applicable experience or they went with someone who was a better fit. Having stories that are nearly all related to the target industry, responsibilities and align with the interviewers past will get you closer to be the one they tell all the rejected candidates about.

Conclusion:

This honestly works best with desperate candidates because they will put in all the work to change their stories the most. The conclusion is to change your stories much more than you expect is necessary if you want to drastically improve your chances of success.
