TODAY’S QUESTION

Oscar asks, “the HR team scheduled an interview but only gave me one day prep. How am I supposed to get ready in one day?”

Boom - you got an interview. I’m excited for you Oscar!

Recommendation: If you have one day to prepare, let’s focus on the big things. Here are the 3 steps I would focus on if I woke up in your shoes:

  • Step 1: Message some friends, peers, or past colleagues and ask for a mock interview in a few hours. Start by doing this before any deep preparation so your contacts have some time to get back to you.

  • Step 2: Prepare your introduction and a solid answer to why you applied to this company. Everyone knows it’s important to have a good why, but most I see are shockingly bad. Here’s what makes a good one:

    • Unique to the company and you - couldn’t be used by another person or with another company

    • Relevant to the skills and experience you have that align with the job

  • Step 3: Go through your resume and write down a short 3-4 line story on each of the bullet points that are from the most recent role and any that are really relevant to the job.

    • They may ask specifically about your resume but if they don’t, this will provide a basis to questions about soft skills like stakeholder management, leadership, etc.

Conclusion:

You got an interview - awesome. Now it’s time to focus on the 20% of prep you can do to get 80% of the outcome.
