Happy Tuesday,

TODAY’S QUESTION

Anthony asks, “I’m so exhausted after applying to roles that I have no energy to network. Is there a way I can fit it in?”

Recommendation: knowing how many applications candidates send out these days, I would be too. Here’s how I’d fit in networking:

  • First, it sounds like from your question that networking is an add on or potentially even an after thought in the process. I’d re-think this question to “how can I build networking as a habit”?

  • Second, building on the profound work of “Atomic Habits” (link), build a routine which stacks useful habits on top of one another.

    • Think about the habits that, if followed in a routine, would yield great results in your job search and add in networking within that routine.

  • Finally, one of the best ways to actually follow the routine you have is to have some sort of daily reward for after you complete it.

    • What works for me is that I don’t get to have my morning coffee until I’ve completed a few things including some form of exercise and a healthy breakfast. Find something you like daily and tie it into the habit building for best results.

Conclusion:

Exhaustion seems all too common in todays job hunt. Set up a routine with good habits for better long term success and sustainability.

Have a great day,

Adam

BOOK RECOMMENDATION*

The 2-Hour Job Search: A book I used during and after the MBA to find my first interviews. It’s a foundational resource for anyone who wants actionable steps to get more interviews.

Atomic Habits: One of the most recommended books of all time, I personally have found great long term value in the direct steps laid out in this book. It is one of the only books that stays on my shelf with sticky notes even after reading it.
