TODAY’S QUESTION

Marie asks, “I have sent out networking messages in the past but no one responds. How can I get more replies?”

Recommendation: This is one of the most common responses I hear regarding networking and a big reason why most people either don’t send messages or did and stopped. Here is the way to increase your volume of replies:

  • If you are sending out connection requests on LinkedIn without a message, you will need to send quite a few before you see any success. Aim for at least 20-30 on day one to increase the chances a few will accept.

    • If you are sending the connection requests with a message, you will need less messages sent. Keep the messages to one sentence and focus on a commonality rather than what you want from them

  • Once you have sent out a high volume of connection requests, the second part is to convert them into conversations. Start the messaging with a really easy question that they can definitely answer. The goal is to get them to send one message at the beginning, just to get things started.

    • A good message to get things going is “I see you have worked at XXX company for YYY years.

      • If under a year, ask why they joined

      • If over a year, ask why they continue to stay

  • Finally, after a few messages, ask 10 minutes to chat over the coming weeks about their experience. While many will ghost you entirely, there is a certain percentage of people who are new enough that they still like the company and in a good enough mood that they want to help you.

Conclusion:

Networking, like most of the career search, can be quite isolating and full of rejection. Know that there is a percentage of those you message that will convert to referrals and the more you put at the beginning of that process, the more referrals you will find.
