Tuesday, June 11 - "Every Interview's 1st Question"

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

- Bruce Springsteen

TODAY’S QUESTION

Rhoda asks, “each interview I do starts with an introduction. What’s the point of this - don’t they have my CV?”

Recommendation: Since you know this question is coming, it’s the easiest question to prepare for. Here’s how:

  • Start with the core experience or skills you have that fit with the job description. Whether it’s experience with data, stakeholders, or a piece of software, this is a good time to bring it up, highlight some of your relevant past roles, and why this role is a natural fit for career path.

  • It’s best to assume the interviewers have not read your resume and even if they have, that they skimmed it. Don’t be afraid to mention things on your resume. You want them to think you’re an obvious candidate for the role as this will set your interview up from the initial stages.

  • Finally, focus on answering the “why” for each of the big transitions in your career. If you moved to do an MBA, why did you choose this country, school, or degree? The same goes for industry changes or changes of department. Go one level deeper than the surface facts on a CV so they can better understand your decision making.

Conclusion:

Given this question is asked in 95% of interviews, it’s one worth preparing for. Focus on fit and explaining your reasoning to set yourself up for success.
