TODAY’S QUESTION
Manuel asks, “The salaries being offered seem lower than I expected. Is it just me?”
This is a tricky topic because it’s often one of the questions asked in the screening calls. You want to present a number that gets you to the next interview but not one cent lower that you need to.
Salaries do seem to have reduced in recent months. Here are my thoughts on the topic:
Anecdotally, salary offers have lowered. Many jobs that were offering 60k are now between 40-50k with no reduction in responsibilities or competition.
If you’re being asked what salary you would accept, I recommend giving a large range with the lower end being a bit lower than you would accept. Add on that, “it’s hard to be precise until I learn more about the job responsibilities and expectations”. You can always negotiate for the higher end of the band later on.
If you really have no idea what a company is going to pay, here are a few resources for you:

Conclusion:
I recommend focusing on getting to an offer and negotiating hard when you get there, as you have much more negotiation power once a contract has been written up.
