Tuesday, May 21 - "I Applied To 800 Jobs!"

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.”

- Thomas Edison

TODAY’S QUESTION

An ex-Tesla employee asks, “Adam, I’ve applied to ~800 positions and am getting nothing!”

First off, is this really 800 or “I think I ate 800 cookies over the weekend” 800?

Recommendation: If you’re getting less than 1% conversion from application to interview, clearly something isn’t working and I recommend finding people in the industry who are experts in getting for your specific role.

  • Double check your resume for mistakes and relevance. The easiest way to look for mistakes is to give a friend $5 for each mistake they find - all of a sudden you’ll find them too! As for relevance, get your resume into the hands of a few people with the same job title you’re aiming for.

  • Make it part of your process to add 5 people from every company you apply to. The goal is to get a conversation where you can ask what they would do if they were in your shoes - everyone loves giving advice.

  • If you've done that for a month and still receive nothing, a final swing for the fences is to appeal to the masses on LinkedIn. Mention you’re open to work and be as clear as possible in what you’re looking for and why you’re a good fit. Add everyone who engages with or comments on your post and start a conversation - it’s awkward but it works.

Conclusion:

First, aim to find people who have the job you want and see what they would do in your shoes. If that isn’t working, put your ego aside and ask for help on LinkedIn.
