Tuesday, November 12 - "Are My Expectations Too High?"
Happy Tuesday!
Here’s what’s on the job description for today:
New roles from a telco that I’ve seen sponsors visas and can be a great place to work and grow.
Marianne asks, “I came to this MBA program so that I could get get a better, higher paying job but can’t get any interviews. Were my expectations way too high?”
“Surround yourself with good people; surround yourself with positivity and people who are going to challenge you to make you better.”

I have had clients get roles here before and I know they can be a great community of people. They also sponsor visas, which is a massive plus.
The company is making a big push in technology and marketing so those two areas are hiring in a big way.

TODAY’S QUESTION
Marianne asks, “I came to this MBA program so that I could get get a better, higher paying job but can’t get any interviews. Were my expectations way too high?”
Recommendation: while there’s always a balance of taking personal responsibility for the lack of outcomes and understanding that the job market plays a role, here’s what I’d say for candidates right now:
First, yes. You probably did have too high of expectations. We all did when we entered the exciting new degree with endless opportunities. We assume because we have X years of experience and went to Y school, we can get Z job.
The issue is there are finite number of Z jobs but what feels like unlimited candidates, all with the same glimmer in their eyes.
Second, the process that used to take a few weeks to a maximum of 3 months can now take years for certain candidates. Whole industries such as consulting aren’t hiring, there have been mass layoffs, and other factors that make the market more competitive than ever.
Finally, if you’re getting zero interviews, there is likely a reason. While interviews can be hard to come by, especially if you’re transitioning industries, you should still be able to get a few every month if you’re applying with a reasonably good strategy and resume.
If you believe you’re doing that and still not getting any interviews, then I would be networking quite hard to understand where the gap is.
The key to most problems in finding a job can be learned through networking with those that have jobs you want and asking them straightforward questions. Check this out which at the end has a good description of how to network for better results.
Conclusion:
It sounds like you’re going through a tough time but it’s something you’ll look back one one day and see that it was a path through which you grew a lot!
