TODAY’S QUESTION

Rhonda asks, “I left my last job to pursue another degree and don’t want to return to the same industry. How do I go about entering a new one?”

Recommendation: One of the most common reasons students pursue a new degree is to enter a new industry. It can be challenging but here is what I’ve seen work:

  • First, consider what makes an industry interesting to you. Are there specific things you’d like in the companies you apply to or do you just want a change and are willing to be completely agnostic of industry?

  • Second, the easiest way to change industries is by applying to roles that are as similar to your last one as possible. You were a brand manager for health care - now go be a brand manager in fintech or media.

    • If you’re interested in applying to multiple industries, I wrote some ideas on how to do that here

  • Finally, have a sense check by doing some light networking in the area or areas your thinking of. Learn a little about the industry before making a full switch and the best way to learn is by talking to those people doing it now.

Conclusion:

Switching industries is as hard as it’s ever been but with a few tweaks to the strategy, you can set yourself up for success. If you’re really struggling, reach out and let me know - maybe I can help.
