TODAY’S QUESTION
Rhonda asks, “I left my last job to pursue another degree and don’t want to return to the same industry. How do I go about entering a new one?”
Recommendation: One of the most common reasons students pursue a new degree is to enter a new industry. It can be challenging but here is what I’ve seen work:
First, consider what makes an industry interesting to you. Are there specific things you’d like in the companies you apply to or do you just want a change and are willing to be completely agnostic of industry?
Second, the easiest way to change industries is by applying to roles that are as similar to your last one as possible. You were a brand manager for health care - now go be a brand manager in fintech or media.
If you’re interested in applying to multiple industries, I wrote some ideas on how to do that here
Finally, have a sense check by doing some light networking in the area or areas your thinking of. Learn a little about the industry before making a full switch and the best way to learn is by talking to those people doing it now.
Conclusion:
Switching industries is as hard as it’s ever been but with a few tweaks to the strategy, you can set yourself up for success. If you’re really struggling, reach out and let me know - maybe I can help.
