TODAY’S QUESTION
John asks, “I had heard management consulting picks up in September. Is that true and will there be lots of new roles available this month?”
Consulting was my first choice out of Oxford and while the pandemic was just ending, it was a thousand times better than it is now.
Recommendation: I think most business students consider consulting at some point. Here’s how the consulting landscape looks right now:
First, it sucks. Every year, the big consulting companies come to campus and try to attract students. This year, finding open positions or interviews is harder than ever. Last year also sucked but there were quite a few more opportunities.
The industry is highly correlated to the global business market and unless you’re a chip producer, the global market isn’t ideal.
Second, the market is not evenly sucking. There are some companies doing well. A candidate mentioned Alvarez and Marsal as a company that is hiring a lot these days. I would recommend trying for industries or specific departments, consultant in financial services for example, rather than the strategy firms at the moment. It provides a way to use your past experience but still get a foot into the consulting world.
Finally, consulting is a networking led industry. Many people find interviews through networking and all the companies I’ve met people at provide a financial incentive to their employees who refer those that get hired.
Conclusion:
Consulting sucks but with a deeper look into the industry, there are still opportunities.
