Tuesday, September 17 - "How Do I Learn SQL?"

Good morning!

Halfway through September - many candidates are still struggling - how are you doing?

Here’s what’s on the job description for today:

  1. New roles from an outside of the box digital acquisition-based firm.

  2. Elizabeth asks, “I’m applying to three different industries. How do I give myself the best chance of getting interviews and a role in one?”

“Success in business requires training and discipline and hard work. But if you're not frightened by these things, the opportunities are just as great today as they ever were.”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Elizabeth asks, “I’m applying to three different industries. How do I give myself the best chance of getting interviews and a role in one?”

Recommendation: many candidates find themselves in the same place. They are interested in multiple industries and want to see what happens. Here’s what I’ve seen work:

  • First, get together five positions you feel you’re a good fit for in one of the three and create a CV that is broadly applicable to the five positions. Then do the same for the other two industries.

    • You will ~100% need a different CV for each industry, if not for each role. This is a good place to start though.

  • Second, applying across the three industries and networking with relevant people at each company you apply to. Do this for approximately two weeks and see what the results are. For each networking call, ask what they would do in your shoes.

  • Finally, review how those two weeks go. Did you get interviews in any of the industries? Did you connect better in the networking calls in one or two industries?

    • It’s a bit much to go for all three for a sustained period so use this strategy as a way to understand where the market sees you as a fit and with which types of people you think you'd like to work with.

Conclusion:

You’re in a completely normal situation and if you follow a structured path, you’ll have a great idea of what to do next in a few weeks.
