TODAY’S QUESTION

Rohit asks, “one of my classmates who is way less qualified than I am got a job. What am I doing wrong?”

Recommendation: Envy is a dangerous game in today’s job market. Here’s a few ideas on how to move forward:

  • First, searching for a job sucks. It’s lonely, full of rejection, and you don’t even get told what you did wrong or why you didn’t get a role. With enough negativity built in, I recommend aiming for a more positive approach when it comes to your community.

    • An easy way to do that is to wish people congratulations when they get a role, even if you felt like you were a perfect fit. Positivity breeds positivity.

  • Second, find an outlet. For extroverts, it’s a bit easier since you’ll probably already have many friends or acquaintances you can grab a drink with and discuss life’s worries. If you’re an introvert, find an online community where you can be as open as you want.

  • Finally, set your KPIs or expectations around action rather than outcomes. If you’re feeling frustrated because others are getting interviews or job offers, then try to refocus and be frustrated if others are working harder than you. Spend the required time to get a solid conversion rate from resume to interview and then go and outwork everyone else.

Conclusion:

Being pissed at others is a pretty common experience in the job search process. Find a place where you can say what you need to say and then refocus your next steps around action to move forward more positively.
