TODAY’S QUESTION
Celest asks, “I’ve got a technical interview coming up and it’s a great opportunity. I’m completely unprepared. Do you have any ideas on how to prep for these?”
Recommendation: congratulations on getting the interview. Here’s how I’d recommend preparing:
First, have a general understanding of what’s expected of you and how much time you have. Before digging into learning a new system or language, I would review some online resources to see what’s going to be tests.
Given that you mentioned it’s a great opportunity, there’s a chance the company is big enough that there will be videos and resources explaining exactly what you’ll likely see in the interview.
Second, set out a plan so that you cover the most important concepts. Focus your time on nailing the stuff you can nearly guarantee will be asked.
Think about it as finding the 20% of material that would cover 80% of the test material.
Move onto other items when you’re tired or once you’re confident in the most critical aspects and have created yourself a cheat sheet covering the main concepts.
Finally, get used to the interview method. For many technical interviews, you’ll have to explain things out loud as you do them, which trips up a ton of candidates.
Find someone who will listen as you explain what you’re doing and the reasons you’re doing them.
If you can’t find someone who will do this, record yourself and watch it back a few times. Don’t let the method of interview be the thing that makes all the prep less meaningful.
Conclusion:
Technical interviews have a few different aspects to them but the most critical thing is to set a plan and then follow it as best you can.
