TODAY’S QUESTION

Rosalie asks, “I have a background in investing/finance but want to work in a more ESG related role. How should I transition to that industry?”

Recommendation: this is something I hear from a lot of MBA graduates who have a background in Finance. Here’s what I’ve seen work:

  • First, know what you’re getting yourself into. Spend some time today or tomorrow understanding the competition, expected salaries, and experience of those within the ESG related field you’re considering. They’re often all quite surprising to candidates who just want a more fulfilling career.

  • Second, if you’re still considering it, begin dedicating far more time to networking within that field. Join clubs, go to work sessions hosted by related groups and organisations, and meet as many people as you can in the next week or two.

    • It’s unlikely you’ll be able to show direct experience related to the ESG area. Transitioning directly from Finance can be challenging so you’ll need to learn a lot more about those in the field and get a ton more contacts.

  • Finally, one of the best ways I’ve seen this transition be succesfull is through volunteer work. It sucks to work for free but there are many fantastic organisations in the ESG area that are desperate for help.

    • Doing this will also provide you validation to whether you’re truly interested in further work down this path.

Conclusion:

Moving to ESG related work is not simple but with the right strategy and a good story, you can move mountains and make it work.

Have a great day,

Adam

BOOK RECOMMENDATION*

The 2-Hour Job Search: A book I used during and after the MBA to find my first interviews. It’s a foundational resource for anyone who wants actionable steps to get more interviews.

Atomic Habits: One of the most recommended books of all time, I personally have found great long term value in the direct steps laid out in this book. It is one of the only books that stays on my shelf with sticky notes even after reading it.
