TODAY’S QUESTION
Yousaf asks, “I had an interview just before Christmas but haven’t heard back. Is it over? How do I follow up?”
Recommendation: tough situation Yousaf. Given the holidays, here’s how I’d move forward:
First, I’d want to know more about the type of interview it was.
If it was a video or AI interview, you may here back by 2030
If it was a screening call or further on, now we’re into something interesting.
Second, I’ve found the communication terrible between HR and candidates since about the second week of December till now. Maybe there’s been a month-long HR conference and they all put their phone away to be more present. More likely is that everyone is on holiday but you never know.
Finally, regardless of whether you think you’ve been ghosted or what month of the year it is, always follow up.
I think a phone call is the best way to get information, assuming you have a phone number. Often their voicemail will say if they’re out office.
If you don’t get an answer, send an email asking when they’re making decisions about next steps and move on. Waiting for months without knowing the results is painful so it’s better to focus you’re energy on higher ROI activities like new applications or reaching out to interesting people on LinkedIn.
Conclusion:
You’re coming up on 3-4 weeks so there’s a high chance you weren’t chosen. Send one follow up email and then move on.
Have a great day,
Adam
