TODAY’S QUESTION

Matthew asks, “I feel like my resume is quite good but heard I’m supposed to change it for each application. How different should each application be?”

Recommendation: In the current job market, your resume should reflect the job description of each role to some degree. There is too much competition to use one resume across many job applications. Here’s the easiest way to do it:

  • First, find five jobs you want to apply to and see if there are any common themes among them. Ensure those are on your resume so that you don’t need to change as much of it each time.

  • Second, when making changes, focus on the first bullet of the first job matching what is under the “required” or “highly desired” section. Make it sound easy to see you as a fit for the role.

  • Finally, especially if you aren’t getting any interviews with your current resume, find people in that industry who can take a look at your resume. Not everyone you meet can or will refer you, so instead send them your resume and ask for their input. They will have a good sense of what’s missing or needs highlighting.

Conclusion:

If you set yourself up for success from the beginning, you will need to do less customisation each time you apply.
