Wednesday, June 12 - "Is My Visa Not Enough?" (+ Remote Jobs)

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

“Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.”

TODAY’S QUESTION

David asks, “even though I have a post-graduate work visa, companies still ask if I’ll ever need sponsorship. What should I say?”

The word ever makes this question so brutal - will you ever need sponsorship?

Recommendation: This is an easy way for hiring managers to screen people out before they have to get to know them. Here's my recommendation:

  • I always recommend that if you get asked this on an application, just say “no” if you have any sort of visa at all. It’s quite a common screening call question, and for that, move to the next bullet.

  • If anyone asks you about sponsorship and you have a visa that allows you a few years of working after graduation, just say “no”. Don’t add on what visa you have, when it expires, that you’re interested in sponsorship if it’s available, just say “no” and shut up. Half the time, the interviewer will get a bit awkward and move on.

  • For those that are willing to cross the grey line of ethics (and this is country dependent), feel free to dream up a spouse that has the right to work where you’ll be a dependent. Mention that you can move over to their visa after yours expires. Who knows, maybe the person of your dreams (and the correct passport) is waiting for you just around the corner.

Conclusion:

The fact is that people on average only work for a company around 2 years before moving on. This question is pretty ridiculous because they assume they’re hiring the next 10-year, company lifer. Just do what you can to move onto the part of the interview which is about your relevant skills and experience.
