Wednesday, June 19 - "Is It Worth Applying With Agencies"

Good morning!

Here’s what’s on the JD today:

  1. A London-based investment company is looking for MBAs and other candidates with a deep interest in private markets.

  2. Adam asks, “I see a lot of jobs that are posted by hiring agencies. Is it even worth applying to them?”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Adam asks, “I see a lot of jobs that are posted by hiring agencies. Is it even worth applying to them?”

Sometimes I think the original ATS was the job recruiter.

Recommendation: It seems about 20% of jobs posted recently have been through a hiring agency and they require a different strategy.

  • To start with, you have to be much more qualified to get a call from one of these companies. They will be presenting you to a client of theirs and they want to find a person who is an obvious fit to the criteria they’ve received.

  • Given they are more directly looking for a list of skills, you need to either be a near perfect fit (80% of more) when compared to the skills or tailor your resume specifically to the job description each time.

  • Finally, don’t network with them. If they reach out to you, fantastic! If not, leave them alone. They rarely get back and I consistently hear how disappointing that is. Just save your time and apply to another job.

Conclusion:

Agencies have their place and if you think about them differently than direct postings, you’ll save yourself some time and pain.
