Good morning!

  2. Sonia asks, “An interviewer asked me what my leadership style was. How do I answer this question?”

TODAY’S QUESTION

Sonia asks, “An interviewer asked me what my leadership style was. How do I answer this question?”

Recommendation: Use this answer as a way to show your organisation and understanding of self:

  • There are many options to start this answer but the main two are adjective or academic. You can pick an adjective such as “enthusiastic” or “intense”. You can also go with the academic options such as “democratic”.

    • Click here for a Harvard Business Review of the leadership styles.

  • This is a great question to show off how process-driven you can be. By explaining that you are the type of leader who follows a framework or a 3-step process keeps you on track and shows the interviewer you are an organised person. I like the following process:

    • Understand (the people, the situation, and the problem)

    • Execute (collaborate to reach successful completion)

    • Summarise (document the outcome for transparency)

  • Finally, make it custom to you in the justification or “why”. When you explain what type of leader you are and how that looks, it’s time to explain why you do it that way. Include a personal story where the interviewer gets to know who you are for best results.

Conclusion:

I recommend preparing for this question since it’s both common and helpful in getting your theme or story together.
