TODAY’S QUESTION
Abbi asks, “some of the companies I want to work for are on a hiring freeze. When will these companies begin to hire again?”
Recommendation: it’s been a rough year or two for candidates and the cocktail of layoffs mixed with hiring freezes makes it all that much more painful. Here’s how I’m thinking about the current hiring freezes:
First, while it’s slightly industry focused, it’s mostly just company to company. For example, consulting industry-wide is on a somewhat hiring freeze but there are still companies within the industry hiring for specific roles.
The rest of them are waiting for clients to begin making big, transformational investments again so they can hire on consultants for way too much money.
This does mean that if a company you’re really interested in is not hiring, there may be a competitor that is. You can use this website to find competitors that may be hiring.
Second, network the hell out of those companies you love. I have been consistently surprised with how much support you can find when someone hears your story and gets to meet you. I’ve seen roles be created just to bring someone in, and worse case scenario is that you have a bunch of contacts for when they do hire.
Finally, from my experience there are two big hiring cycles. The first is right now, from September to November. The second is from January to April, when companies get a new budget and hire for all the new year’s projects.
This hiring cycle has been worse than I expected, which means a reversion to the mean is possible during the next cycle.
If companies are going to begin hiring in a big way again, it would be in January.
Conclusion:
Hiring has been slow for nearly everyone these past few months and I expect (read hope and pray daily) that things improve in the new year.
