Deepa asks, “it’s mid-October and I am not getting any interviews. What am I doing wrong?”

Recommendation: that is a brutal feeling. I was helping a candidate earlier this week who was in the exact same situation and this is what we learned:

  • First, when the candidate was struggling to get interviews, we were pretty annoyed. They’re completely qualified and have a resume with some of the biggest names in his industry. Yet, nothing.

    • What we did to figure out the problem is to change strategies. They spent more time networking and less time applying, since applications were not working.

    • Instead of asking for referrals, they told their story and asked about fit and who they were hiring and why he might be missing opportunities. Given the honesty, we received valuable insights right away.

  • The main insight they gathered was that the companies were not willing to hire anyone who didn’t have industry experience. They were unlikely to take any risk, meaning they wanted someone with industry and role experience, but were unwilling to make any concessions on industry background at the moment.

  • Whether this is due to the current market and the massive number of applications for each role or not, it doesn’t really matter.

    • Now that we’ve learned this, we will be changing application strategy to spend more time on each application for the small number of roles that are both industry and role fit for this candidate’s experience.

Conclusion:

Getting no interviews is like banging your head against a wall, it sucks. If you’re in this situation, I recommend reducing the number of applications you’re making and focusing on the ones that are nearly a perfect fit.
