Julienne asks, “I’m trying to get more networking in. Do you think in-person or virtual is better?”

Recommendation: Tough question! The issue with in-person networking is that it takes up a big portion of your day but it probably does lead to better connections. Here’s how I’d tackle this:

  • First, it doesn’t need to be a “this or that type” of answer. The first thing I’d do is create a profile for the person I really really really (three reallys!) want to meet. For those people, aim for a coffee near their office or somewhere easy for them to get to. For everyone else, there’s Google Meets or Zoom.

  • Second, don’t only focus on the volume of networking but also on how you use each one. Clearly the first goal is to get a referral for most candidates. If you get the interview though, make sure to keep them in the loop. Ask for help in getting more contacts at the company or doing mock interviews or asking questions about the interviewers. See how many times you can gain value from these connections rather than one and done.

  • Finally, don’t be afraid to re-use connections. If someone referred you and it didn’t work out, thank them and ask if they can get you in touch with someone else from their network.

    • The key is to find that person in their connection list already. No one wants to do all the leg work for you but they might give you a warm hand-off if you find the person in advance.
