TODAY’S QUESTION

Linda asks, “I’ve had 3 first round interviews in the past month, including big names like Amazon. I keep getting rejected - what should I do differently?”

Recommendation: This is an important stage of the process that many candidates find themselves in. You can get interviews but not final rounds. Here’s what I recommend to get to the next stage:

  • First, thank your lucky stars you’re getting interviews. Nothing is more painful than zero interviews. I promise you there is a legion of candidates who would trade places with you so take one second to congratulate yourself. Okay, second over - next thing.

  • Next, prepare the basics and use mock interviews with people at those firms (or your most detail oriented friends) to test whether you’re hitting the right notes.

    • Introduction

    • Why this firm

    • Salary expectations

    • Questions for the interviewers

  • Finally, and while this is overkill, it will nearly guarantee you move onto the next stage, tailor a specific story to each point on the job description.

    • Start with listing out all the soft skills and find a part of your resume that aligns with it. Then get a good STAR story. Are you 100% sure your stories have an obvious task?

    • It’s unlikely you’ll get asked all of them but this type of preparation reduces the chances you’re caught with a gaping mouth, surprised they’re asking about THAT, whatever that is.

Conclusion:

Take a breath - you’re doing okay. To move to the next level, begin preparing like the person who worries their friends because they might be “over-preparing”.
