Wednesday, September 4 - "Internship Ended Without Offer!"

Good morning!

How’s your Wednesday?

Here’s what’s on the job description for today:

  1. New roles from a company creating an ecosystem for a highly specific type of technology startups.

  2. Michael asks, “my internship just ended but the company didn’t extend an offer. Now what am I supposed to do?”

“It is hardly possible to build anything if frustration, bitterness and a mood of helplessness prevail.”

- Lech Walesa

TODAY’S QUESTION

Michael asks, “my internship just ended but the company didn’t extend an offer. Now what am I supposed to do?”

Oof - that seems to be very common this year. Something of a warning to others currently thinking about using internships to get full time roles.

Recommendation: Given that you’ve just finished the internship and are back at the drawing board, here are my recommendation:

  • First, is there any way you can further squeeze the internship for all it’s worth?

    • Can you network with more people in the firm and ask their advice?

    • What about talking with HR about upcoming positions or speaking with competitors on what their up to?

  • Second, spend the get it on your CV in the most applicable manner. What type of job are you applying to now and how can you best make this recent experience look like you’ve already done that role?

  • Finally, know that this recent experience is most relevant right now and will lose value over time.

    • The best way to do that is by looking up past employees of the same firm. These contacts are as useful as your alumni network so take advantage.

Conclusion:

You’re a shiny new job candidate with fresh experience. Use the next few weeks to take full advantage!
